Singapore's LASALLE College of the Arts building

Founded in 1984 LASALLE College of the Arts is a specialist tertiary institution focused on contemporary arts education in fine art, design, media and performing arts in the Asia Pacific. Its Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Musical Theatre Programme is the first of its kind in Asia, training students in singing, acting and dancing.

In 2007, the LASALLE College of the Arts moved to its new SGD$65 million home at Rochor Road in the heart of Singapore. Located in an area designated as the Arts, Culture, Learning and Entertainment hub of Singapore, the 370,000 sq ft city campus was awarded several architectural accolades.

Its aluminum and black stone exterior walls enclose a canyon-like interior surrounded by glass and steel volumes. Bridges link the volumes and serve as performance platforms and a Teflon membrane roof arches across the interior ravine and shelters the court below where students work, play and mingle.

The construction of the building had a few unique challenges. In particular, the huge concrete foundation had to be carefully poured because of its size (almost one hectare) and had 2 floors. Engineers were concerned about the possible stresses incurred during its construction, especially as the concrete is curing.

Alphatech’s predecessor company was appointed to assist during this phase. Fiber-optic sensors designed to be embedded into concrete were inserted at strategic locations around the site prior to concrete being poured and monitored as the foundation was being cured naturally. 1. A Arthur says:

La Salle College of the Arts which is only in its 27 years of existence has come a long way. I am impressed by its Teacher:Student ratio and the courses it offer. Perhaps in the coming years it should be The College of Fine Arts in Asia, as in the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) and Parsons in New York City. Good write-up.
