An Illuminating Social Enterprise

Let It Go by Brian Tan

The little girl clutching at the balloons seemed to be drifting higher and higher past the balcony not wanting to let go. Too late. Dressed in plastic bag material, if she let go now she will fall 50 feet to the ground below. But if she held on, she will be carried into the clouds by the plastic bag balloons. Her dilemma is one created by artist Brian Tan: are we prepared to forgo our habits of relying on plastic bags to achieve a more sustainable environment?

Let It Go” is one of 27 art pieces dotted around *SCAPE at Orchard Link – Singapore’s not-for-profit organisation focused to facilitate youth-orientated programs. Singapore’s first Youth Light Art Festival – LUMINANCE! – was open from 23 June to 1 July 2012 and was free to all.

Conceived and organised by three social innovators, Allan Lim, Kenny Eng in collaboration with sculptor Sun Yu Li, The Living! Project, as a social enterprise, aims to generate social awareness of urban sustainability to change perceptions and lifestyles through Art, Community and Sustainability.

What’s Your Flava by Ekta Nanwani

Among the displays is one by Ekta Nanwani. A banker by day, and a budding artist who likes baking, she created a light display “What’s Your Flava” filled with cup cakes (I tried one that is bandung flavoured topped with real cream) in each of the slots which lights to display a message “I Love Cup Cakes”.

Along the outside are “Everyday Aspirations” projected onto the wall – laser cut words on wood – from a length of high intensity lights. Created by a home-maker and part-time art teacher, Karen Mitchell, it creates a spotlight on our very own aspirations.

On a lower floor, ‘Scream Capture‘ which turns your screams, pent up frustrations into positive energy – mesmerising soothing lights for your enjoyment. Just stand under the 15 foot tall cone and scream out your stress for the day. Then watch the lights calm you down! In a nearby corner three ladies exdude sophistication, simplicity with an air of mystery and glowing in a cool blue light – completely oblivious of your earlier screams. That is the beauty of the sculpture by Sun Yu-Li.

The Art Park on the ground floor has been turned into a fairy-tale land of lighted flowers and shrubs, slowly changing colours as it pulses peacefully, creating an Alice in Wonderland feel about the place. And on the wall is a projection of the moon as Chang Er, the goddess of the moon appears and disappears as if you are dreaming.

Each of these displays have been thoughtfully crafted and placed to produce the best impact at night. Some have music, others are interactive. And all are fascinating. Do come before the exhibit ends on 1 July.

We hope The Living! Project will be able to secure the necessary resources to take the show around Singapore, particularly to the Heartland areas where they will be sure to be appreciated and enjoyed by even more people. Perhaps we can create just the awareness and change where it is needed most.

Well done Allan, Kenny and Yu-Li.
