Managing Director – Tan Eng Tong

EngTong graduated from Imperial College London and has an MBA from Cranfield School of Management in the UK. He is also a Chartered Engineer, Member of IET, Associate of City and Guilds and a certified SixSigma Champion.

He is passionate about focusing on the needs of the customer and how this can be delivered by the business.  He believes the integration of contemporary western management techniques with the richness of traditional Asian Values will bring a new understanding to the meaning of social responsibility. As Advisor/Mentor at Grameen Creative Lab @NUS, a separate entity created by the Nobel Laureate Prof Mohammad Yunus, he has been promoting the idea of sustainable social businesses.

He was a mentor at Stanford University and more recently has been active sharing and guiding new entrepreneurs at incubators around Singapore, and as Executive Advisor at NUS Enterprise, the venture arm of the National University of Singapore.

In his 25+years of experience, he held senior executive positions in major corporations like HP and Agilent, developing high level strategies as a business strategist, an “intrepreneur” and entrepreneur. As Executive Director at Seagate Technology, he led the transformation of how e-business was to be handled in the company worldwide and orchestrated the strategy for how future investments were to be made to emerging storage technologies.

As a pioneer and innovator, he has managed and led the productisation of many technologies into products and services – from early inception to commercialization – creating and adding new markets worth US$1billion for his employers’ business.

Among his many achievements, he managed a $65 million disk drive manufacturing operation at HP Bristol, pioneered the development of the DAT/DDS Tape Storage System with Sony, created the IrDA wireless industry standard which led to the proliferation of Bluetooth, and led the development and introduction of many consumer and internet based products.

He has managed and led teams in the UK, France,  Italy, Japan, Taiwan, USA, China, Malaysia and Singapore; and lived in Edinburgh Scotland, Bristol England, Sunnyvale California and Beijing China.  He currently shuttles between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.
